Digital skills can help you communicate ideas, support a community project, promote a small business idea, build a portfolio or prepare for further learning and employment.

ASST’s Creative Digital Skills Programme offers practical, beginner-friendly learning. You will learn through short demonstrations, guided practice, individual activities and feedback from the tutor.

Course 1 of 3

Canva + CapCut

Content Creation with Canva and CapCut

Plan and create social media graphics and short-form videos, then bring them together as a mini content campaign.

What you will learn

  • Identify the audience, purpose and main message for digital content.
  • Develop a simple content plan and practical schedule.
  • Create clear, consistent social media graphics in Canva.
  • Edit a short video in CapCut using trimming, text, captions, audio and transitions.
  • Apply accessibility, copyright, consent and online privacy checks.
  • Export and organise files for sharing or portfolio use.

Practical Graphic Design with Canva

Learn why a design works and create coordinated digital and print materials that communicate clearly.

What you will learn

  • Apply hierarchy, contrast, alignment, balance and spacing.
  • Choose and combine typefaces, colours, images, icons and shapes.
  • Select suitable sizes and formats for print and digital materials.
  • Create a visual system that keeps several designs consistent.
  • Use Canva to produce and revise practical communication materials.
  • Check readability, accessibility, image quality and export settings.

No-Code Website Design with Canva

Plan, design and publish a simple, responsive one-page website without writing code.

What you will learn

  • Define the purpose, audience and main action for a website.
  • Plan a clear one-page structure and organise useful content.
  • Write concise headings, supporting text and calls to action.
  • Build a responsive Canva website using images, text, buttons and links.
  • Add and test navigation and external links.
  • Improve, publish and update the site using available Canva options.

Course scope: This course covers a simple informational website or landing page. It does not cover coding, advanced databases, booking systems or online shops.

Who can take part?

Designed for beginners

The programme is for people who are currently seeking asylum. You do not need previous design, video-editing, coding or Canva experience. You should be able to complete basic laptop tasks, such as opening a web browser, using email, uploading files and saving work.

What you need

  • Availability to attend all three course days

  • CapCut access if you choose Content Creation

Who can take part?

Receive an ASST Certificate of Completion

To receive the certificate, you must attend all three course days and take part in the required learning activities and final practical project.

The certificate recognises completion of an ASST community short course. It is not a university qualification, an NZQA qualification or an academic credit.
